More than 300 citizens urged the assembly to prepare our peninsula for a changing climate in the Borough Comprehensive Plan 2019.

City councils of Soldotna, Seldovia, Homer and Seward have all adopted resolutions asking the borough to form a commission of local experts focused on building resilience in our communities.

This letter will be sent to the Borough Assembly when a resolution is proposed in May 2020.

Serving as a bridge between our communities, administrators, and experts, this commission will improve the borough’s ability to listen to stakeholders and to develop effective policies to protect our interests and those of future generations.

The Cities of Homer, Soldotna, Seldovia and Seward have all passed resolutions in favor of such a commission, and over three hundred citizens already told the Assembly that they wanted this commission established during the comment period for the Comprehensive Plan 2019. Please join their voices.

The Resilience and Security Commission comes at almost no cost to the borough and, a  primary purpose would be help draft policies to generate savings and jobs for the borough. Given the enormous costs of poor resource planning—consider for example the losses associated with the 2019 Swan Lake Fire or the expenses associated with our landfills– we expect that the upsides from this small investment will far outpace any costs.

Please invest the future of families and businesses and support the establishment of this commission.
