Welcome, & thank you for visiting our chapter! We are a group of varying individuals from all walks of life who read about solutions to the climate crisis & discuss how to enact positive change within our community here on the Kenai Peninsula. Our first course of action is a call to arms for community members to advocate for clean energy on the Peninsula:

As many of you know, the Kenai Peninsula is facing an impending energy crisis. By this coming March 2024, Homer Electric Association’s (HEA) natural gas contract with Hilcorp will expire, & Hilcorp has said they don’t plan to renew it. Since 85% of our electricity comes from Cook Inlet natural gas, that’s a huge issue for us.

If we can’t find a way to shore up & diversify our power grid, we face either a shortfall in electricity or a massive increase in the price as HEA looks for other sources of gas. For many of us, those are not attractive options. Inflation has already hit many of us hard & paying significantly more for electricity is not feasible.

Natural gas is not a sustainable resource & is going to get more expensive as time goes on. As a community, we need to push HEA to invest in developing renewable infrastructure on the Kenai Peninsula – now. HEA cooperative owner-members (that’s you!) need to tell our elected HEA board members that we want an affordable long-term solution to this problem & hold them accountable to deal with this crisis in a timely manner. Short term fixes with expensive natural gas just won’t cut it for us.
